On this the last Sunday in December we find ourselves deep in the heart of the Twelve Days of Christmas. The early Christian community believed that there were Twelve Days between the birth of the baby Jesus and the arrival of the wise men from the East; so celebrated the coming of the Christ for Twelve Days not just one. The number Twelve is an indicator of great understanding and wisdom suggesting that much of our knowledge about life is gleaned from our experiences, which enable us to retain a sense of calm even in the most turbulent of situations. Twelve is significant in the life of human kind because there were Twelve tribes in Israel, Twelve disciples followed Jesus, there are Twelve astrological signs in the zodiac, there are Twelve months in the year, and our modern clock is divided into two groups of Twelve hours. Twelve is considered to be the ancient number of completion as it signals the end of childhood and the beginning stages of adulthood.
In Metaphysical Christianity we talk of forces that function below and above the field of the conscious mind. Charles Fillmore writes that ‘the subconscious realm of humankind has Twelve great centers of action”. This coming Sunday we will look at the meaning of the number Twelve in our lives, and what the impact our Twelve Powers have on our Spiritual Journey as we move from the darkness into the light.
