Our Many Paths to Unity

This Sunday’s service is one that I have been thinking about for the last couple of years. When I have led the new members classes, one of the first things I do is ask people what their religion of origin was. I then list the responses on a flip chart. It’s always eye opening to see what diverse and rich theological backgrounds we all come from. On Sunday you will get some further insight in our community by actually seeing the many paths that have led us here. You will also get to hear from some of the ministry leaders in our community to get an understanding of their diverse theological backgrounds.

We have all heard about how different religions are pitted against each other for political purposes. We know that over the centuries wars have been and presently are being fought over intolerance of other religious and spiritual practices. When I think of these things I am proud to be a member of the Unity CommUnity. We are a place where diversity is praised and peace and harmony are the rewards. We are all spiritual seekers discovering divinity within. In Unity we focus on the spiritual Truths. We see them repeated in many spiritual practices and we applaud this. I am so pleased that as adults we’re sharing these principles and also that our children are learning these valuable lessons. My prayer is that one day all religions and spiritual practices will focus on what they have in common.

Well it’s been quite a ride! This Sunday we complete our 7-week book study on the book “Even Mystics Have Bills to Pay.” We have talked about many big ideas during these last weeks. I gave away $50 at each service one Sunday. We faced our fears with a visit from a Mountain Lion. We had the author out here to give a workshop. This Sunday, I will be reviewing some of the big concepts.

Attaining the Unattainable, The Will of God

Some practices you may be familiar with, some you may not be familiar with. They are all effective! We will also explore more big ideas on the topic of prosperous living. I am loving this book. This Sunday I will be going into more detail about the concept of prosperity’s demonstration through giving. There are rites of passage of giving that we can all pass through once we understand them. I know I have seen myself pass through each stage. Last Sunday I announced that I will be sharing the stage with a mountain lion this coming Sunday. How does that fit in with this talk? Well, if I told you that, I would be letting the cat out of the bag… It will be revealed on Sunday.

This coming Sunday we will be kicking off our annual Seven Week in-home book study. This is a great tradition at Unity In Marin. If you are new to the community, this is a great way to become better acquainted with others in the congregation. It’s a great way to make new friends or to connect with old friends. This is also an opportunity to really talk and share these exciting spiritual principles that can change our lives for the positive!

Rev. Jim Rosemergy, the author of our book, “Even Mystics have Bills to Pay”, was a former teacher of mine at Unity Village years ago. He will be coming out to UIM later in the series to deliver a Sunday message. This is a great book. I guarantee you are in for a few surprises during this series….

Steppin’ Up to Peace

This Sunday the Youth and Children of Unity, and Youth and Family program director Rev. Pat Palmer, will add their voices to Unity’s fabulous “Be the Peace” symposium. In this, our annual Youth Service, we will continue these lasts weeks’ focus on different spiritual traditions. Recent children’s classes have been about approaches to peace, and on Sunday the children will don monk’s robes to highlight their growing awareness of inner peace as the true path to peace in the world.

We will also honor those children who are Steppin’ Up to a new Sunday youth education class, as well as their teachers. Sunday’s topic, which says it all, is Steppin’ Up to Peace. Click here to listen to audio message

Many Paths – One God, “A Taste of Spirit ”

Every August I enjoy taking us deeper, not only in a historical and scholarly way, but also in a way that deepens our understanding of Spirit in action.

We continue to look at different spiritual traditions and the similar stories and themes. So far we have looked at the proliferation of Flood stories, compared Jesus and Buddha, looked at the tradition of fasting in multiple spiritual and cultural settings and compared Jesus and Moses.

This Sunday we conclude the Series Many Paths – One God. This topic is about the experience of Spirit. What is it like? How can we prepare for it? I hope your enjoying this series. We continue to look at different spiritual traditions and the similar stories and themes. So far we have looked at the proliferation of Flood stories, compared Jesus and Buddha, looked at the tradition of fasting in multiple spiritual and cultural settings. This Sunday we continue the Series Many Paths – One God. This topic is a comparing of the Judeo and Christian traditions by looking that the most important people in both traditions, Moses and Jesus.

Many Paths – One God: Fasting and 40 Days

Through August I will be looking at different spiritual traditions and the similar stories and themes that come up frequently. I find it fascinating to look at the origins and similarities in many of the ancient stories that come from different cultures and traditions. This week I will be talking about the practice of fasting and the significance of the number 40 (as is 40 days, 40 years, etc…). The idea of fasting and the number 40 come up in many, many religious practices from the Druids to the Hindus the ancient Egyptians, Mexicans, North Americans, Judeo/ Christian traditions, etc.. What were they teaching and what can we learn from them today?

Many Paths- One God- Flood Stories

Today began a Series Many Paths – One God. For the next five weeks we will be looking at different spiritual traditions and the similar stories and themes that come up frequently. It can be fascinating to look at the origins and similarities in many of the ancient stories that come from different cultures and traditions.

This week we talked about Flood Stories. Ancient civilizations such as China, Babylonia, Wales, Russia, India, America, Hawaii, Scandinavia, Sumatra, Peru, and Polynesia all have their own giant flood legends. All of these civilizations had their own Noah!

The ABC’s of Dealing with Change

Are you dealing with change in your life? I know I am!

How are we dealing with change? This is the key question. I’d like to meet someone who is not going through change. That’s because we are all experiencing change in one form or another every day of our lives. Some changes are more dramatic than others, but change is constant.

How we deal with change can be the difference between a life filled with harmony and growth and one that is filled with frustration and anger? Listen to find out!

Wizard of Oz

Metaphysical Movie Month Concludes with,

Metaphysical Movie Month- Harry Potter

This week the Listug Girls look at the Metaphysical interpretation of the world of Harry Potter. They focus on the first film which is about a boy named Harry who learns that he is a wizard. He ends up going to the school Hogwarts where he learns magic and makes new friends. Unfortunantly the most evil wizard in the world, Lord Voldemort is after Harry and Harry spends his free time trying to save his friends and school from Voldemort. He learns to live his life by love and not give into the fear which Voldemort creates.

Metaphysical Movie Month “Castaway”

We continue with Metaphysical Movie Month. This week we explored the movie “Castaway.” It is one of my favorite movies. I have seen it more times than I can remember without really knowing why it has such an impact upon me. Over time I can now see how relevant it has become. I personally resonate with the desire to manage time like the main character does as a FED EX manager. Then one day he is forced to let go of that trait as he finds himself alone on a desert island.

Have you ever had a time in your life when you felt like you were shipwrecked, marooned on a desert island? We will hear from a fellow congregant, describing what it’s like to actually experience being shipwrecked. It’s a great story and one in which we all have something to learn. Audio

 

Metephysical Movie Month- “Field of Dreams”

July is metaphysical movie month. What better movie to begin our series with than a baseball movie. When I think of Summer I think of baseball. This particular movie is the story about a man who hears an inner voice and follows its guidance. Like most Bible prophets who hear Gods guidance, the instructions generally run against conventional thinking. Yet when they persevere they gain in faith understanding and strength. Ray is told to build a Baseball field on part of his cornfield. He may lose his house and the farm as a result… will he follow this inner guidance in the face of losing everything in the material realm? Come and find out for yourself on Sunday as I explore the metaphysical meaning behind this story.

Country Music Sunday

This Sunday we continue our Spirit in Music Series!
This Sunday is Country Music Sunday! One of the things that I love most about country music is that it tells a story. They are stories that remind me of Bible stories. When we remember a Bible story we tend to also remember the underlying message, for us in Unity it’s the Metaphysical message. When I hear country music it brings to the forefront most of the challenges in life we all face. But it also brings to mind the power of faith and overcoming. Whether its Loretta Lynn singing about being a Coal Miners daughter or George Strait singing, I saw God today those themes prevail.

Every Sunday my prayer is that every person who comes through these doors will be inspired by the message the meditation and or the music. I find that music can really touch our hearts in profound ways during a regular service so this month it’s about putting the music front and center to carry the message. We have heard the Beatles music, Classical Music and we end with Country Music. I hope you enjoyed the series. Let me know if you would like it again in 2010.

Building a Foundation of Love

Tuning In

This Sunday we continue our Spirit in Music Series! We believe that God is expressing in many ways in our life experience. I know that I am touched by music in deep way that many other mediums do not. With this in mind this month we will be exploring different genres of music and exploring how each expression touches on our human and spiritual life experiences.

This week the title of my talk is “Tuning in.” We will explore the classical music genre. We will hear music from the three “B’s” Bach, Beethoven & Brahms. Each of them was a great creator of classical music. Together I see their music being a reflection of the creative process, how all things come into creation. I look forward to sharing these insights on Sunday. It will be a harmonious experience.

All You Need is Love

“Can You Hear Me Now?”An Exploration of Miscommunication

“Can you hear me now? Good.” What hidden lesson is encoded in the Verizon Guy’s mantra?  Can challenges with communication be a barrier to our fully living our Unity Principles?  Aman Motwane says “Our legacy is not our accomplishments or our possessions. It is the quality of our relationships.” How often, when we have conflict in our relationships, is that conflict caused by miscommunication?   The percentage of the challenges in my life that can be traced back to misheard, unspoken, misinterpreted or incomplete messages is pretty high. And in this electronic age of texting, email, Facebook and Twitter, communication isn’t getting any less complicated… So let’s have some fun with it!  We’ll explore some different aspects of this important subject together and learn some tools to avoid and amend mis” and “missed” communication.

Who is my Neighbor?

This Sundays talk title comes from the following the book of Luke. “Who is my neighbor?”
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 ”You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 
- Luke 10:25-29

On Sunday as we hear how Jesus responded to this question. We will also explore how his response can help guide us today. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Divine Motherhood

The Trouble With Angels

What could possibly be the trouble with angels?  Charles Fillmore tells us that angels are the projection into consciousness of a spiritual idea… but that is just the problem.  Some ideas come to us out of the purely material world and are passed over to a higher concept that, though still good, is subject to humanity’s laws and fears. Some ideas never were good in the first place and only get worse with time. But true angels, our Guardian Angels, are those spiritual ideas that represent love, freedom, understanding and realization. These angels come to us only by the higher way – the Christ method in each of us as taught and demonstrated by Jesus Christ. How do we know the difference? Join us on Sunday for a serious discussion about angels.

Easter Sunday- The Road to Ammaus

This coming Sunday is Easter. We will have three services to accommodate the increased attendance. The services will be at 9:30am -11:15am and at 1pm. We will hear musical selections from Desiree Goyette’s Oratorio. Denise Ruelas will be leading the choir and they will be fantastic, as usual. I look forward to sharing with you the story of the resurrection and how Jesus appeared to two people on the road to Emmaus!

Palm Sunday

This coming Sunday we will begin Holy Week with the celebration of Palm Sunday. It is the beginning of a journey for us to Jerusalem. Metaphysically, Jerusalem represents a Habitation of Peace. What must it have been like for the people at the time to come to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover? We will get an idea what it was like through the eyes of one man on Sunday. I look forward to you joining with me on Sunday as we explore Jesus entry into Jerusalem.

Being Prayer

This Sunday we are blessed to hear from Valerie Marshall, our lead chaplain.

 

We have become a community that holds the Light for one another as we share our spiritual journey.   This is the Sunday we thank our Chaplains Emeriti, and introduce and dedicate our new Circle of Prayer Chaplains – some of the brightest, most devoted Light-bearers in our midst.

 

Let’s do what the UIM Prayer Chaplains do; let’s jump into the deep end of prayer.   What are we doing when we pray?  What are we not doing?  How do we walk in the Light when we are walking through the valley of the shadow of death?  Judith Cutino will share her experience of doing just that.  Let’s practice ‘being prayer’ together, and see what happens!

Touching the Hem

This coming Sunday we continue our Lenten series on “Walking the talk: Facing down fear with faith!” If you have a friend or family member facing challenges this is a series you want to bring them to! This week’s talk will be delivered by, Rev. Jeanne Sutter, our Pastoral Care minister. She has some surprises that you won’t want to miss.
“Touching the Hem”
On March 1, our message will explore the meaning of “faith,” and how it works to bring goodness and healing into our lives. When we go to “fear” we abandon our gift of “faith,” and allow the healing or goodness we seek to be blocked. We will consider how we can become receivers of healing, as we look at the biblical story of the woman who was healed when she touched the hem of Jesus’ garment. We have some healing stories of our own, which may inspire us to open our channel of “faith” and receive the infinite flow of healing love and light.

This Sunday I will be focusing on The House of Worship. Why do churches look the way that they do? What’s the origin of church buildings? What did the first Christian church look like?

 

In the weeks to come I will also be exploring the inner construction of the church buildings, Sunday morning costumes, rituals and the communion ritual. Do you know why priests ministers dress in robes? Do you know the origin of why you were told to dress up for church? Why do churches have pews? These questions and more will be answered in the weeks to come. I look forward to sharing this with you.

Who Moved My Cheese? Part 2

Are you experiencing any change in your life? Maybe it’s a new job. Maybe it’s a job search forced upon you. In these times, relationships are under tremendous pressures: financial, personal, physical, and spiritual. Change comes in all forms and sizes for all of us, whether we are children, teens or adults. Maybe it’s the change of a child going to a new school. Or maybe the change is for you as a parent sending that child off to school. Maybe you’re a teen who hasn’t made the basketball team this year. Maybe you’re an adult starting over after a divorce. Maybe it’s a time of unemployment and financial turmoil.

Since we are all experiencing some kind of change during these times, I have chosen a book for all of us to read and reflect on for the first two Sundays in January. The book is titled Who Moved My Cheese? -Rev. Bill

It is a book I read years ago that I find especially relevant for all of us. Whatever change we’re going through I believe this book and the two weeks we all (children, teens and adults) spend reading and talking about this book will result in a greater awareness of how we are presently dealing with change and alternatives to how we deal with change. This book comes in versions for children, teens and adults. They are available in the bookstore.

The Burning Bowl

This a time when many of us set intentions by making resolutions for the coming year. I find that before I can commit to a new resolution, I need to release baggage that I have been carrying from the prior year (or years). We have a ritual in Unity called the Burning Bowl. In this ceremony, we write down a few words or a sentence that reflects what we want to release because the idea is no longer serving us. Maybe it’s anger or un-forgiveness, impatience, guilt, etc…. Whatever we want to release, we can do so. This ceremony is one way to release these things. This is a service you won’t want to miss. What a great way to end one year and begin another!

A Christmas Carol

Do you recall the first time you read the book or saw a movie of A Christmas Carol? It’s a story that has endured over time. We can all immediately call to mind an image of Ebeneezer Scrooge. What about Jacob Marley or the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future?

There are lessons here for all of us that are worth some exploration. I look forward to sharing this story to see what we can all learn from it together. Merry Christmas!

Unity Children’s Christmas Pageant

This Sunday is our Christmas pageant, featuring children and adults acting out the real meaning of the nativity story.  We address the dilemma of people who may find themselves, their children and the world excessively materially oriented, as we discover together the metaphysical meanings of the characters and events in this eternal drama.  There is great spiritual power in realizing and re-claiming the love and joy that underlie all true creation and new ideas.

 

We’ll also have the fun of singing well known carols, and the laughter that always accompanies children’s performances!

Believing is Seeing

On Sunday we welcome back Rev. Richard Mantei, Minister Emeritus from Unity In Marin. Richard retired from church ministry in early 2006 after about two decades of serving this community. I know we’re all looking forward to hearing Richard once again.

Here is what he has to say about his upcoming talk:

 

What has dominated the news for months now, “the economy”, right?  We know all about bailouts, recessionary times, golden parachutes and unemployment statistics. What a perfect time for us to explore and deepen our awareness and practice of Unity’s truth principles relating to prosperity in the midst of the current outer reality.  Rev. Richard Mantei’s talk is titled “Believing is Seeing”.  We will explore one of Unity’s definitions of prosperity:

 

“Prosperity is a consciousness of God as the abundant everywhere present resource, unfailing and ready for all who open themselves to it through faith”.

Healing Intention

This past Sunday our Very own Jeff Perry was our guest speaker. The talk title is “Healing Intention.” Jeff’s story of recovery is incredibly inspiring. At one point about 5 years ago he was sent home from the hospital to die. Within months he recovered from that illness and got married. You can read his story in the december edition of Daily Word. His story will be read this coming month by around a million people! We get to hear it in person. FYI, Jeff and his wife Catherine are relocating out of the area so this is probably the last time you’ll get to see and hear Jeff in person as a regular community member. I am sure he has more to share than is in the Daily Word article that will be enlightening for one and all.
