This Sunday our guest speaker is Bruce Thompson, an economist and student of Brian Swimme. Bruce will explore the contradictions of an economic system that promises endless growth while plundering a finite planet. From the mystery of a lost civilization and the potential dangers facing us to the inspiring story of one woman whose commitment, courage, and faith started a movement that changed the face of the earth, he will challenge us to see abundance in a truly new way. Bruce offers an alternative vision of human well-being grounded in actively replenishing the beauty and deep generosity of the Earth—and sustained by our expanding comprehension of the stunning interdependence and harmony of the universe in which we participate.

This week we concluded our series on relationships. Darrell and Nevin (our relationship experts) and I talked about “CommUnity Relationships.” How are we communicating with each other in our own community? Are we modeling authentic communication with each other? If we are going to change the world it begins at home.

We spent much time last year in meetings coming together to find out what our collective vision is for this community for the year 2020. We called this perfect vision 20/20. The vision team collated all of the information that was provided and has come up with a vision statement that reflects those themes along with core commitments. Do you want to know what this vision is and what those commitments? Listen to find out.

This month is all about relationships. This week Rev. Medora and I will be talking about the relationships that we have with our family and the roles that we assumed in our family system. We are not always aware that the roles we assumed as children are still being played out in our adult relationships in our work life and in our social interactions. I invite you to join us as we delve into this important topic.

If I’m so loved, why don’t I feel it? Learn why you may not be feeling the love from those around you – and yes, they are sending it to you! Together, we will realize new ways of feeling and expressing the abundant love that is around us. This talk is based on the book The Five Languages of Love by Gary Chapman. Join me as we explore this powerful teaching. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it’s helped me to realize what I really need in a relationship to feel loved!

The month of February will be dedicated to another of the top three passions that were identified in January. The theme that came through loud and clear was a passion for showing living in wonderful relationships. We will cover a lot of ground this month by exploring how we can show up and have healthy relationships with our community, our friends, our lovers and ourselves. This week we kick it off with guest speaker Rev. Dr. Kim Clarity whose talk is titled “What Would Love Do Now?”

This Sunday is the final installment in this series. On the list of the ways in which our community wants to live our passions is to show up in the world and provide service. That’s one of the top three passions identified as most popular ways to express our passions. I promised that Unity as a community would become a vehicle where we can express our passions for how we want to live life. The best way to insure our dreams come true and to live our passions is to help others do the same.

Each week in January we will take important steps to bring these dreams from the realm of thought to manifestation. This week, the talk is titled, Manifesting Our Dreams. Anything Is Possible. Monday the 17th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. King had a dream that seemed impossible. I have a dream!

Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, the cofounders of Unity also had a dream and we are all beneficiaries of their dreams. There are many others who share traits that led to their success, such as J.D. Rockefeller, Ghandi, Moses, and William Colgate. What do these dreamers and others who have made great accomplishments have in common? I’ll tell you on Sunday.

This Sunday we kick off a series called “Living our Wildest Dreams!”

Each week in January we will take important steps to bring these dreams from the realm of thought to manifestation. This will be a great series to bring a friend to expose them to the practical application of spiritual principles! It will be a memorable series. We begin with the Burning Bowl ceremony.

I find that before I can commit to a dream, I need to release baggage that I have been carrying from the prior year or years. We have a ritual in Unity called the Burning Bowl. In this ceremony, we write down a few words or a sentence that reflects what we want to release because it is no longer serving us. Maybe it’s anger or un-forgiveness, impatience, guilt, etc…. Whatever it is we want to release, we can do so. This ceremony is one way to release these things. If you are ready for a change in your life, this is a service you won’t want to miss.

On this the last Sunday in December everywhere we turn, the television, Face Book, on the freeway, in the office, at home there seems to be a whole lot of yelling going on. We are supposed to be people of Love. Metaphysically, we believe that we are all one and that love is the great power that binds together the Universe and everything in it. What has happened to us? Join the Unity Community this Sunday, as we explore what we mean by the Power of Love in the heart of this holiday season.

This Sunday I will be talking about something that I never talked about before. The talk is titled “The Black Madonna.” This is new ground for me. I have learned a lot about this topic over the past several weeks. I had a vision of a black female Spirit Guide in a dream weeks ago and it spurred me to do some research and thinking about the significance of this symbol. I was quite surprised to learn that this symbol has been around for centuries and is still venerated in our present day. I will take us on a historical, philosophical, psychological and spiritual journey on this topic.

Christmas and children naturally go together and we will enjoy experiencing that this Sunday in the annual Christmas Pageant. Following the drama, Rev. Pat Palmer will offer some possibilities for completing the statement, “And the Babe Came to Tell…” In Unity we consider what was said BY Jesus, more than what was said ABOUT Jesus. It is inspiring, delightful and sometimes surprising to learn the true meaning of the stories and teaching he left to us. As noted by Emmet Fox in his book, Sermon on the Mount, “Jesus came to carry the human race forward to the next great step, the most important step of all…” We will consider a little of what the Babe came to tell this Sunday as we celebrate together the birth and the incredible legacy of a master teacher of our time.

This coming Sunday is the second week of the Advent season. What is Advent? It comes from the Latin word adventus meaning coming or arrival, (especially of something new or important). So it’s the coming of the birth of the Christ. There are many Christmas traditions. Yet, over the centuries, the meanings have become forgotten. This coming Sunday we will be looking at some of the customs and traditions that are now common elements of Christmas celebrations so we can better understand their origins. We will have a clearer understanding of how much we share with other traditions as well as how some of these customs got started. I think you will find it informative as well as revealing. At the very least, you will have some interesting topics to discuss at your Christmas gatherings!

What’s in a name? Juliet asked that of Romeo in Shakespeare’s play. This is still a relevant question today and one that has many levels. On Sunday we explored the ideas behind our getting named and getting renamed at different points in our life experience. Maybe the name we were given at birth is no longer reflective of who we really are at this stage in our development. Ever wonder why in the Bible that names are changed? Even God is referred to by different names in the Bible. In Native American cultures names are changed and we also all share a spiritual name. Listen to find out what we discovered.

This Sunday is week five of our six-week series on Deepak Chopra’s book Jesus: A Story of Enlightenment. This week I will be talking from a scholarly standpoint about the Essenes, a Jewish religious group that grew in the time of Jesus. I will also be exploring the concept of when Jesus became divine. Deepak Chopra has his ideas and the Bible has other views. I’ll share them all with you. I look forward to sharing with you more personal, scholarly and enlightenment process ideas that came up for me when I read this book.

This Sunday is week two of our six-week series on Deepak Chopra’s book Jesus: A Story of Enlightenment. I will be looking at the character of Judas as well as looking at the historical Judas of the Bible. This character brought up memories of judgments that I have made in the past. It’s no surprise that all my judgments were not accurate or kind. How quickly we judge before learning all the facts. Even with all the facts, are we following Jesus example when he said, “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment” ? — John 7:24

This coming Sunday, we will be kicking off our six-week in-home fall book study. This year we are reading a book by Deepak Chopra called Jesus a Story of Enlightenment. It’s a modern day parable that seeks to fill in the blanks “of the lost years” of Jesus life between age 12 and 30. The Gospels are all silent about these years. This book tells a story about what may have happened in the life of Jesus during that time. Its part of the three book series. The other books are about the enlightenment of Muhammad and the Buddha. The last parable book we studied was Aman Wotwane’s Yes You Can Change the World. Both of these books are modern day parables. Can we learn from parables? Well, Jesus our elder brother and wayshower used parables as a way to teach. Deepak weaves stories to speculate on Jesus’ path to enlightenment. I think there are many gems in here we can relate to and learn from. I am sure it will spark great conversations. After all that’s the point of a good parable, to learn and grow on our own spiritual path.

How am I going to get everything done? Why are things not going my way? When will have the life I’ve been dreaming of? How could things possibly work out from here? Now I don’t know about you… but just reading these questions tenses up my shoulders! My ego readily identifies with them, but they are truly questions without answers, leading us away from the answers we are looking for. Would you like to explore some spiritual tools you can use to move away from the energy brought on by monkey-mind questions like these? Would you like to hear about some examples of how we can distill our intentions to their purest, most potent form? The 1951 movie,”The Day the Earth Stood Still” is the springboard for Sunday’s topic, shared by Rev. Pat Palmer. The movie was a stark statement of the self-destructive directions the world had been taking in regard to warfare, and a shocking portrayal of a hypothetical response that the rest of the universe might take, should aliens choose to come here to intervene. We will be invited to look at ourselves in this light. Together we can heighten our awareness of decisions we make, and most importantly, heighten our awareness of the support that we have in making the highest personal choices. There is Life flowing through us that empowers and guides and continually seeks to inform and guide its creation. This Sunday, we will consider how to receive that stream of life.

This Sunday we discover that the movie O’ Brother Where Art Thou? is really the story of each of our spiritual journeys. Along the way we encounter plenty of temptations and obstacles, a one-eyed Cyclops that beats us up and Sirens that lead us romantically astray. Each of us has a way of hearing what we want to hear and we often become fixated on a particular goal – often involving money and love. As we journey, it becomes apparent that what we are really seeking is peace and meaning in our life. We all have a spiritual need. We find that in our wanderings, we might learn how to accept each other as we are and keep plugging along no matter what obstacles present themselves. Perhaps the biggest life lesson of all is that we can have fun and lighten up as we search for peace and meaning. At the end of the day, the blind soothsayer tells us that we ‘will find a fortune’ but also suggests that it may not be what we are looking for. Please join us on the Fourth of July for the journey of a lifetime!

Blessings,
Rev. Medora

This Sunday we will celebrate the children and youth who are graduating (Steppin’ Up!) to the next higher class in their spiritual studies. They will be acknowledged, along with their teachers and classmates. Additionally, the congregation will be fascinated by two Musical Plays, written by Rev. Pat, the children and teachers. The songs are from the rich tradition of Unity Music.

Sunday’s talk will focus on the opportunities to Step up in our own lives. It is often true that we don’t know the conditions or situations we will encounter when a change is challenging. However, there is something we can know…we can know we are guided and supported; that we are being led by an all-knowing power and presence ever within.
